Rus serflik düzeninin çöküş dönemine tutulmuş bir ayna olan üçlemenin her üç başkarakteri de (yeğen Aduyev, Oblomov ve Rayski), Vladimir Korolenko'nun deyişiyle ortak bir yazgıyı paylaşmaktadır; bu, can çekişen bir sineğin yazgısıdır. Eski yıkılmakta, fakat yeni henüz ufukta görünmemektedir. Roman, Rayski'nin, Volga kenarında, nehrin oyduğu uzun yalıyarın (falezin) -roman adını buradan alır- bitişiğinde bulunan babadan kalma Malinovka köyünde geçirdiği altı ayın dramatik olaylarını konu alır.
